With Grace gone off to cool her temper, Roland left the pavilion for a brief stretch himself. High emotions were enervating, and as Grace said—there was still a murderer to catch. He needed to get himself in order, and perhaps something stimulating to drink to give him the energy to finish this tiresome day. Then he would be prepared to go through the methodical task of checking alibis.

“If anyone requires the knowledge of where to find me, I am going to The Castle Tavern,” he told Prinny’s servants, and then made his way to Castle Square, just a short distance away.

The open square took him less than five minutes to reach by walking, and at this time of the afternoon, it was fairly bustling with people visiting the shops. He had passed through the square several times already since his arrival in Brighton, so he was familiar with its layout, even if some of the street hawkers and vendors moved their carts about.

The Castle Tavern, advertised with a simply painted wooden plaque, had a decent reputation among the bon ton and was well kept. More importantly, it served coffee—an unusual, strong beverage he discovered since he returned from the front. He had tried it only twice before, and while he was still uncertain how he felt about it, that had given him enough familiarity to say that coffee certainly had a bracing effect he needed. The serving maid fluttered a little over serving him, but she did bring him a light luncheon and the promise of as much coffee as he wanted to drink.

Roland had planned to put his thoughts towards reviewing what they discovered about the suspects, but that was not where they wished to stay. Again and again, they were drawn to Grace, and how she had pulled from him in the audience with the Prince Regent.

She was angry. She had every right to be. But surely, he resolved, he could make her understand. He had acted with honourable intentions, and Grace would come to see it once her temper cooled. After all, she approved of what he had done for the Sprouts. How could she approve any less of him taking care of his brother?

Perhaps he had been somewhat selfish, keeping Thorne nearby for all this time. But it had been important to keep him out of the reach of Thaddius. And he had not saved up nearly enough money to set Thorne up with a business or some other means of income. Not yet.

He would explain to Grace and she would understand, eventually. She was the only woman of her station who might.

“Lord Percy?”

Roland looked up from the paper he had been staring at without reading, and suddenly his full attention was snared. For it was Prinny’s Master of the House who was standing there, seeking him out. The man looked decidedly worried.

“Walker?” Roland asked, setting his cup down. It was so unlikely that the man would be sent to retrieve him like a common page that Roland realised something very serious had occurred.
